This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast we had the pleasure of doing a roundtable discussion with amateur neuroscientist, Spinal Cord Injury Survivor, and retired firefighter Devon Colbert along with Dr. David W McMillan who is a Research Assistant Prof. in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami and the Dir. of Education and Outreach at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. In this episode we briefly discussed Devon's experimentation with psilocybin in hopes of finding a useful treatment to help in restoring function after spinal cord injury, the research studies he's been working on since he was last on the podcast, and some related studies that Dr. McMillan has worked on. We also chatted about some of the dangers of using psychedelics after a spinal cord injury including spasms and the potential to overheat your body's core temperature. We talked with Brandon about how he suffered a spinal cord injury, the city of Everett Massachusetts naming October 24th Brandon Conde day, and how is community and friends and family rallied around him to raise $50,000 for continued rehabilitation after his injury. We also spoke about his experience with two of the Empower SCI summer programs, the tightknit community of spinal cord injury survivors in the Boston area, and documenting his journey forward after his injury. This week on the the Live to Walk Again Podcast we had the pleasure of speaking with Sean Mahoney who is a Spinal Cord Injury Survivor and a Sports and Performance Psychologist and Jake Daniel who is the Dir. of Performance and Neurological Reengineering at Barwis. We spoke about the boating accident that left Sean paralyzed, how Sean eventually started rehabbing at Barwis in Deerfield Beach, Florida where he met Jake, and how the stars aligned for the two of them to continue working together at the Barwis Colorado location. We also talked about what drove Jake to pursue the neurological side of rehabilitation and performance, friend of the pod Nick Lucius' role in Sean's rehab and Jake's career development, and the friendship they all share. This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Mark Blumberg who is the Chair of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Iowa. We talked to Dr. Blumberg about his study into twitching while in REM sleep and how Western medicine thought about this twitching before Dr. Blumberg cracked the code. It turns out this twitching is actually a message traveling from the body to the brain to help map out our brains knowledge of our bodies. We chatted with Dr. Blumberg about how this could impact spinal cord injuries and possibly work with Artificial Intelligence to help plot new neural pathways between the body and brain to restore function and movement after SCI or strokes.
